Reading Josef Pieper with Dr. Fred Putnam

4 September-4 December, 2025 (runs Thursday evenings for 14 weeks)

6:30-8:00 p.m. CENTRAL TIME

Description

At the end of this course, you will better understand(1) virtue and the virtues; (2) what it means to know and understand; (3) the importance of contemplation and celebration in our lives and the lives of our schools, among many other concepts and ideas.

One of the most important Christian philosophers of the twentieth century was Josef Pieper (1904,1997). Because he wrote in German, and because his works only began appearing in English a few decades ago, he is largely unknown, apart from Leisure:The Basis of Culture. Far more important and helpful is Josef Pieper:An Anthology, which he himself compiled from his own works a few years before his death. In this online seminar we will read and discuss our way through the Anthology, learning from Pieper and each other to think carefully and well about what it means to be (truly) human, about what it means to know some thing or someone (a topic crucial for teaching), and many other fundamental aspects of our existence.

Pieper is known for his deep insight into human nature and the relationship between God and his creation, and its implications for us means to live a good life and the clarity of his writing. One of the great benefits of reading Pieper, testified to by many classical teachers, is that he offers us a way to understand and use words that often function as buzzwords in classical education-words such as "virtue", "knowing", "believing", and"curiosity". Gaining a better understanding of terms that we all use affords us the opportunity to sharpen our understanding of what we are doing and thereby strengthen our school's identity and unity, and better enable us to present our selves and our vision to those within and outside our schools.
